The 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV’s ultra-big looks and huge batteries may be intimidating, but at least they’re learning how to share. That’s because for 2024 the boxy off-roaders can now charge other EVs up to 6 kW with a new, onboard 19.2-kWh Level 2 charger. (Earlier Hummer EV Pickups can charge up to 11.5 kW.)
The newly equipped feature was revealed at a recent event for the Hummer EV SUV, held near San Francisco. GMC executives showed off the newfound trick of charging one Hummer with another and said bidirectional charging was just one of the features they’ve heard from early customers that would make the big vehicles more useful.
“There’s nothing out there that does all this,” lead vehicle engineer Aaron Pfau told The Drive. Pfau also pointed to the batteries’ ability to mechanically switch from series to parallel modes for fast-charging speeds (when not attached to another Hummer) up to 300 kW.
The onboard charger is equipped with 2024 GMC Hummers from the 2X trim and higher. The charger can also power other equipment up to 3 kW, making the big rig a generator on the go. Both EV-to-EV charging and generator functions require an optional cord, sold by GMC.
This year the Hummer EV SUV joins the pickup on showroom floors. The SUV is nine inches shorter than the pickup and has a slightly different battery layout to accommodate the shorter stance. The SUV offers the same basic package: big battery, upright looks, and exceptional capability from its three electric motors that create 830 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque at its massive 22-inch wheels. (Or when equipped with the off-road package, chunky 18-inch wheels wrapped with MT tires.)
The 2024 GMC Hummer EV goes on sale this year for $79,995 to start, including destination fees. Check out our first drive of the 2024 Hummer EV SUV next week.
