Fernando Alonso says he is surprised that Aston Martin have been so competitive so early in his time with the team, but cautioned that the Silverstone-based outfit need to be developing their car at the same rate as their rivals. Alonso moved to Aston Martin from Alpine for the 2023 season, and his arrival has coincided with an upturn in form for his new team. Having ended 2022 only seventh in the Constructors’ Championship with a best finish of sixth, Aston Martin are currently second in the 2023 standings, with Alonso having finished third in all three races so far, and the Spaniard said he hadn’t expected his new squad to be so competitive so soon. Alonso was hoping for ‘learning’ experience in 2023 “I was hoping for ’23 to be a learning season, and in ’24 maybe to be challenging the Ferraris and Mercedes,” Alonso told media, including RacingNews365.com . “But we challenged them in Bahrain, in race one. So obviously now everything looks more optimistic. But now we have to deliver. “We will see very soon, from Baku, Imola, Barcelona, the [other] teams will start to bring upgrades to their cars, and we also need to be a top team in that regard – on-track, but also off-track. “We need to learn many things throughout this season to be a contender in 24, hopefully.”
