Fernando Alonso has quipped that Lewis Hamilton ‘has a short memory’ when reacting to his comments about Red Bull’s performance advantage in 2023. During the Saudi Arabian GP weekend, Hamilton had commented about how quickly Red Bull driver Max Verstappen had overtaken him during the race. At the time, Hamilton said: “When we were fast, we weren’t that fast. That’s the fastest car I’ve seen, especially compared to the rest.” When his comments were put to Fernando Alonso in an exclusive interview with L’Équipe , the Aston Martin driver suggested that Hamilton recalled the advantage he had in his Mercedes at the start of the turbo-hybrid era. “I don’t agree at all,” Alonso responded when told about Hamilton’s comments. “Last week I finished 20 seconds behind Checo [Perez] and Max [Verstappen]. Hamilton and [Nico] Rosberg were a minute ahead in 2014 and 2015. He has a short memory, he’s getting old!” Alonso added that he now believes Hamilton is being exposed by the deficiencies of Mercedes’ underperforming W14 car. “With a normal car, you can see that he has weaknesses,” he added. “Before, he drove alone or sometimes with his team-mate. But look – he is the record holder for poles and George Russell has just given him a 2-0 in qualifying this season. It just goes to show how much the car is still a key factor.”
