The Alfa Romeo and Haas teams have taken new power unit components for each of their drivers for the Australian GP weekend. The Ferrari team suffered from power unit issues in the opening event of the season, with Charles Leclerc eventually taking a 10-place grid penalty for already exceeding the allowable limit of Control Electronics (CE). He and Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz also both took new Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) in Saudi Arabia as a precautionary measure, eating into their limited allowance for the season. For this weekend’s event in Melbourne, the remaining Ferrari-powered cars have taken new ICEs, each car using their second of three available for the season. Whilst no reliability concerns have been confirmed by either team, a switch to a second ICE at the third round of a 23-race F1 calendar can still be judged to be an early change. As they have not exceeded their allowance, there are no penalties to be handed out for these changes. Mercedes driver take new exhausts and gearboxes Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will also be equipped with new mechanical components for the Australian GP. As well as taking new exhausts (eight permitted for the season), the British drivers will be using new gearboxes for the event, which will be their second of four allowed for the season. Also taking new exhausts for the Australian GP are Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, the Williams duo of Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant, McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, Haas’ Magnussen, and Alfa Romeo’s Bottas.
