A petition aiming to overturn the result of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and hand Lewis Hamilton an eighth Formula 1 World Championship has reached 100,000 signatories. Launched immediately after the controversial race ending on 12th December 2021, the petition claims that “justice was not served” in the closing stages of the event, which was settled by a one-lap shootout following a late Safety Car period. During the controversial Safety Car period, Masi elected to allow all lapped cars in between Hamilton and Verstappen to unlap themselves to facilitate one final lap of racing. On the restart, Verstappen used his fresh Soft tyres to pass the old Hard-shod Hamilton and claim his first World Championship. The FIA launched an investigation into the events at Yas Marina, and removed Masi from his role. F1’s governing body also stated that: ‘the results of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the FIA Formula One World Championship are valid, final and cannot now be changed,’ in their March 2022 report in the ending. The recent Australian GP was the first time Masi had been seen in a Formula 1 paddock since that controversial race. The petition on Change.org continues to rise in the number of signatories, with the next milestone on their website set at 150,000.
