Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has credited Sergio Perez
for his “resilience” after battling back to finish third in the São
Paulo Grand Prix. The Mexican is under pressure following a string
of poor performances since winning two of the first four races this
season, struggling to match teammate Max Verstappen’s pace in the
RB19. Performance did return at his home race last weekend, only
for an overzealous move at Turn 1 to take him out of the race.
Despite that disappointment, Perez has been on form again at
Interlagos and on Saturday, he went within a tenth of Verstappen’s
Sprint Shootout best effort, before making two stunning overtakes
on George Russell and Lewis Hamilton to finish third in the Sprint.
‘He manages to pick himself up’ “He was quick in Mexico and it was
a shame it didn’t work out for him – it was one of those moves
where you were going to be a hero or zero and, on that day, it was
zero,” Horner told Sky Sports F1 when asked how he has managed to
assist Perez. “So we said ‘Checo, turn a page, it’s done, you can’t
change it. Take the positives out of the weekend and apply them in
this race a week later’. “He has brought that here. “One of his
real strengths is when you think he is down, he manages to pick
himself up and brush himself down and he has got a resilience. “We
have seen a bit of that today.”
