Current Indy NXT driver Toby Sowery will test drive an IndyCar for the first time with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing next month.
Sowery has competed in many different racing series, including two full seasons in Indy Lights in 2019 and 2021. He recently made a return to the IndyCar ladder series, joining HMD Motorsports for select rounds this season.
In late April, his first Indy NXT race in a year and a half, the British driver secured a podium finish at Barber Motorsports Park, which impressed those in the paddock that watched on.
RLL has now offered him a chance to sample the top tier machinery next month with a test day scheduled at Sebring Raceway on June 8
“I am grateful to RLL for giving me this opportunity,” said Sowery. “After the frustrations of 2020 and 2021, I focused on building a strong team and a more strategic approach to reaching the NTT IndyCar Series.
“This test is a massive moment for my career, and I am more hungry than ever to deliver the results I know I am capable of and show what I can offer on the IndyCar stage.
“[RLL team co-owner] Bobby Rahal came to meet me in the UK earlier this year; his passion for the sport is infectious. I also visited the new facility before the start of the season and was hugely impressed by the dedication and commitment to reaching their ultimate goal.
“This drive to commit everything you can to be the very best and the genuine love of the sport is something I share with RLL, so there is a natural synergy between us.”
Sowery is currently sharing a seat in the #14 entry with Josh Pierson, who is only able to compete in some of the Indy NXT rounds due to conflicting WEC commitments.
The 27-year-old’s next race will be in the double-header from the new Detroit street circuit on June 3-4, just days before his IndyCar test in Florida.
“We’re really pleased to be able to do this test with Toby,” said Bobby Rahal. “After a year-and-a-half hiatus, he’s had a great podium finish at Barber and showed his potential.
“We’re looking forward to having him with us at the test and anticipate a positive outcome.”
