Max Verstappen has insisted a review will take place into the pit stop that ultimately cost him the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The two-time World Champion had started the race second but made light work of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by the time DRS was enabled on lap three. When Nyck de Vries stopped on track at Turn 6 having hit the Turn 5 apex wall to break his AlphaTauri’s steering, yellow flags were thrown but no Safety Car, given there was no indication of his collision. Instead, the Dutchman had seemingly prepared to reverse and continue with his engine still running. So Verstappen pitted on schedule to shed his medium tyres for a set of hards, only for the Safety Car to be deployed after he had exited the pit lane. Subsequent replays showed the gravity of de Vries’ situation and led to questions as to why the championship leader was told to box. This left him behind Perez and Leclerc when his rivals pitted under Safety Car conditions, losing less time due to the mandatory lap time delta drivers are forced to comply with in such circumstances. Team Principal Christian Horner explained that there was no way the pit wall could have known about de Vries damage, though Verstappen does expect an internal review. “I could see the car stopping but you see it on the screen, you can not look into every detail on whether every wheel is connected to the car properly,” explained Verstappen, speaking to media including . “Of course, the team has a bit more overview to that but we will look into that to see if there was anything we could have done differently. “I don’t know when the exact call came to pit so it is a bit difficult to say at the moment.”
