Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff believes the outfit must “give
it all” to turn around its declining fortunes, following a recent
prediction from Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time World Champion
recently claimed that Red Bull will remain a dominant force in F1
until the end of the current regulation cycle in 2026, when the new
power units will be introduced. While Mercedes showed promising
pace at the Mexico and Qatar races, the Brazilian Grand Prix was a
reality check for the team as it exposed weaknesses in its W14.
Mercedes has undergone a revamp of its senior management in the
last couple of years, with former Chief Technical Officer Mike
Elliott becoming the latest to leave his post. Wolff: We’re not
giving up Wolff believes the team must do all it can to turn around
their fortunes, otherwise they risk not winning races until the
next regulation revamp. “We’re giving it all to break a psyche,”
Wolff told Bloomberg . “We had five years of dominance of Ferrari,
then we had a short spell of Red Bull, then it was us eight times
in a row. “Now it’s the second Constructors’ Championship for Red
Bull or the third Drivers’ Championship with a very good driver.
“We are giving it all we have back in the factory and at the
racetrack. We’re trying to come up with a car and an execution that
is as good as it can be. “We have a next cycle of regulatory engine
2026, but we have got to turn this around [before then].”
